The size and shape of a person’s nose can have a great overall effect on his or her self-esteem. If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your nose, whether as the result of an accident or genetic traits, rhinoplasty can prove greatly beneficial. There are several different techniques for performing a nose job. Dr. Bittar can discuss your personal goals with you and determine the best method to meet your needs.
Internal Rhinoplasty - Endonasal rhinoplasty, also known as internal or closed rhinoplasty, is a nose job in which the incisions are placed inside the nostrils, greatly reducing or eliminating visible scarring. Local or general anesthetic may be used during the procedure, which can last from one to two hours. During internal rhinoplasty, the underlying bones and cartilage are altered via the internal incisions to achieve the desired results. Closed rhinoplasty is generally reserved for cases in which relatively small changes are being made to the nose.
External Rhinoplasty – If your goals require more extensive cosmetic surgery to be met, you may benefit from external rhinoplasty, or open rhinoplasty. During this procedure, the interior of the nose is accessed through incisions in the columella—the strip of skin that separates the nostrils. The surgeon then has full access to the interior of the nose for maximum results. Great care is taken to minimize any scarring from the incisions. Both internal rhinoplasty and external rhinoplasty have unique benefits, and both are offered in Austin by Dr. Bittar at Beau Visage Center.
Septoplasty – Septoplasty is a type of rhinoplasty used to correct deformities in the septum that may arise from accidents or genetics. This one-to-two hour surgery entails internal incisions from which pieces of the septum can be altered or removed. Scarring is often minimal or inconspicuous. In addition to cosmetic purposes, septoplasty can be used to treat difficulties with breathing that can result from an irregular septum.
Chronic Nasal Obstruction – One major cause of daytime weariness, insomnia, and serious sinus problems is chronic nasal obstruction. Dr. Bittar’s skills as an ear, nose, and throat doctor equip him to remedy serious nasal breathing problems through rhinoplasty. If you are experiencing severe breathing limitations due to obstructed nasal passages, the Beau Visage Center team can help you improve your daily life.
Though the length of the procedure will depend on the extent of the work that is done, rhinoplasty is generally an outpatient process. Once surgery is completed, incisions are closed and a cast or splint may need to be applied to the nose. There is a minor recovery period in which some swelling or discomfort may occur, but this is easily controlled with pain medication. Most patients find they no longer need pain medication after two days. Cold compresses may also be used to alleviate swelling in the first few days.
The full effect of the procedure may take a few months to become evident. Most of our patients are thrilled with the results of their rhinoplasty; they have been rewarded with increased social comfort, confidence, and self-esteem. Rhinoplasty can be both cosmetic and functional - patients who have had breathing difficulties have experienced dramatic improvement after surgery - .and can be used to address both minor and extensive transformations. Whatever your needs, the benefits of rhinoplasty can help boost your quality of life.
The effects of rhinoplasty will vary among different patients. Dr. Bittar and his team can help you make a decision about which procedure will be most effective at meeting your needs.
